Video Chat With People Near You — Without Handing Over Your Location

There are two kinds of app for meeting people you haven't met, and neither one does the obvious thing.
The dating apps know roughly where you are. They use it to build a queue of profiles — photographs, a bio, an age — and then you swipe, and then you wait. If you both swipe the same way you get a text box, and some hours later, if the conversation survives, you might get on a call. The distance was real, but everything downstream of it is asynchronous and slow.
The random chat sites put you on camera with a stranger in about four seconds, which is the part the dating apps never got right. But they'll pair you with anyone, anywhere. Half the fun of that is talking to someone in a city you couldn't find on a map. The other half of the time you'd rather talk to someone who knows the same neighbourhoods you do.
Nearby matching on strangerly.in is the missing combination: a live video call with a verified stranger who happens to be a few kilometres away, right now. No profile to write. Nothing to swipe. No waiting for a reply.
How it works
Open the filters and pick a distance — Within 10 km, Within 50 km, or leave it on Anywhere. The first time you choose an actual radius, your browser asks whether to share your location. Nothing happens before you tap a chip: we never ask on page load.
From there matching works the way it always has. You're placed in a queue and paired with the first compatible person, except that now we hold out for about twenty seconds trying to find someone inside your radius. If nobody nearby turns up in that window, we widen the search rather than leave you waiting — and we tell you we've done it, instead of quietly ignoring the filter you picked.
When you match, you'll see something like 📍 ~4 km away next to the other person's name. They see the same figure for you.
One thing worth knowing even if you never touch the distance chips: nearby people now rank higher in everyone's queue. You don't have to opt into a radius to get more local matches — sharing your location is enough, and picking a radius just makes it a hard preference instead of a nudge.
What it does with your location
This is the part that matters, and most apps are vague about it, so here is the whole mechanism.
Your coordinates are rounded before they leave your device. Your browser hands us a position accurate to a few metres. Before anything is sent anywhere, we snap it to a fixed grid roughly 1.1 km across. Everyone standing inside one grid square becomes, as far as our servers are concerned, the same single point. The precise figure never leaves your phone or laptop — it isn't uploaded, it isn't logged, and it isn't stored.
The rounding is fixed, not random — and that distinction matters more than it sounds. The intuitive way to blur a location is to add a bit of random noise to it. It doesn't work. If someone can ask for your position repeatedly, they can average the answers, and the noise cancels itself out; enough samples and they have your real position regardless. This is roughly how researchers de-anonymised users of several large dating apps, working out home addresses from nothing but distances. A fixed grid has no such weakness. Ask a thousand times and you get the same rounded number a thousand times, because there is nothing underneath it to recover.
Nobody ever sees a number, only a band. The distance shown on a match isn't a measurement, it's a bucket: "Less than 1 km", "~5 km", "15–25 km". There's no direction, no bearing, no map, and no way to watch the figure change as someone moves. The grid stops the systematic attack; the bands stop the casual guess.
It exists only while you're online. The rounded position lives on your queue entry while you're searching and on your presence record while you're connected. Both are deleted the moment you disconnect — not on a retention schedule, immediately. The chat room itself stores the distance band and nothing else; your position never enters it at all.
We never look it up ourselves. No geo-IP, no address lookup, no third-party location provider. If you don't grant the permission, we have nothing, and we don't go looking for a substitute.
Declining costs you nothing but the distance chips. Matching, chat, voice, video, games, translation — all of it works exactly as before. There's no degraded mode and no nagging.
Knowing someone is a few kilometres away changes the calculation a little, and not always in the direction people expect — proximity makes a stranger feel more familiar than they are. What we deliberately didn't build
No map. No browsable grid of nearby people. No profiles, no photos, no bios, no location history, no "last seen near". We don't sell location data, and there is no version of this where we would, because we don't have anything precise enough to be worth selling.
The count you see — "about 40 people within 50 km right now" — is a real count of people actually online near you. If there are fewer than ten, we show nothing at all rather than pad the number, which is why you might not see it at first in a smaller city.
What a radius means where you are
Ten kilometres is not the same thing in every city, and in a few it behaves oddly enough to be worth knowing before you pick a filter:
- Mumbai — a 60 km strip about 5 km wide, so half your radius is usually sea.
- Delhi NCR — 10 km keeps you inside one city, 50 km covers all of them.
- Bangalore — where distance and travel time have come apart completely.
- Hyderabad — the old city and the tech corridor sit either side of a 10 km radius.
- Chennai — the one metro where nearby effectively means Tamil.
- Pune — no, 50 km does not reach Mumbai.
- Kolkata — dense enough that the smaller radius is usually the better one.
- Ahmedabad — the Sabarmati splits the city either side of 10 km.

Pick a distance, allow the permission, and start a video chat. If nobody's around yet, the search widens on its own and you'll still be talking to someone in a few seconds.
If you'd rather not share your location, don't — everything else works, and nearby people will still tend to reach you first anyway.
