strangerly.in is designed to be private by default. You can start chatting without creating an account, and we keep data collection to the minimum needed to run the Service.
Anonymous by design
No sign-up is required. We use an anonymous identifier to connect you to a match and to enforce safety actions like blocking. Your chats are not saved to a personal profile.
Camera, microphone & on-device AI (biometric)
Video and voice chat use your device's camera and microphone, streamed peer-to-peer to the person you're matched with (WebRTC, which exposes participants' IP addresses to each other to establish the connection).
Strangerly Space (shared second screen). If you choose to pair another device (a laptop, TV, tablet or second phone) to your call, that device's camera, microphone and/or screen capture are streamed peer-to-peer between the paired devices in the same way — we do not upload, record or store the video, audio or shared screen. When you share a screen, only what you choose to share is sent. Sharing a screen exposes whatever is on it to the other person, so avoid showing private or sensitive information.
If you opt in, an on-device AI produces a gender estimate and a basic liveness/face check from your camera. This is special-category (biometric) processing done entirely in your browser on the basis of your explicit consent (asked before you enter chat); it is an estimate, notidentity verification. We do not upload your camera feed or store biometric templates — only the resulting label (e.g. "F"/"M") is used for the session/match. You can decline and still chat.
Location (distance matching)
If you choose a distance filter, we ask your browser for your location and immediately round it to a grid roughly 1.1 km across. Only the rounded value is ever sent to our servers, and only while you are searching or online — it is deleted the moment you disconnect. Other people never see your location, only a rough distance such as “~5 km”, and never a direction.
We do not use geo-IP lookup, we do not keep any location history, and we never share or sell location data. Declining the permission restricts nothing except the distance filters themselves — matching, chat, voice and video all work exactly as normal.
Cookies
We use strictly-necessary storage (theme, age confirmation, consent choices) and, only with your consent, optional analytics. See our Cookie Policy. Analytics/ads storage is denied by default via Google Consent Mode.
Safety & audit log
To keep the community safe and to investigate abuse, when you start a chat or submit a report we record a safety/audit entry: your IP address (observed by our server), coarse device information (e.g. model, operating system and app version) and a randomly-generated device identifier, together with the anonymous user ids involved, the room, and — for reports — who reported whom and why. This is a server-side record used only for safety, abuse-prevention, moderation and legal compliance; it is not shown to the other participant and is separate from the peer-to-peer IP exposure inherent to WebRTC described above.
Retention
Chat messages exist only for the duration of a session and are deleted when the room ends. Presence and matchmaking data are transient. Safety/audit records (IP, device information and device identifier) are kept for up to 90 daysand then automatically deleted, unless we must retain a specific record longer to handle an abuse case or meet a legal obligation. Reports and payment records are kept as long as needed for safety and legal/accounting purposes. Biometric AI results are not stored beyond the live session. Strangerly Space pairing codes/QR and the association between paired devices are transient signaling data, kept only for the live session and deleted when the conversation ends.
What we may process
- An anonymous user/session identifier and presence (online/offline) state.
- Live chat messages for the duration of a session, to deliver them to your match.
- Your IP address, coarse device information (model, OS, app version) and a randomly-generated device identifier, recorded when you start a chat or submit a report, for safety, abuse-prevention and audit purposes (see “Safety & audit log”).
- Reports you submit, to keep the community safe.
- Analytics, if you accept analytics cookies: page views, and usage events such as starting a chat, opening the premium plans and starting or completing a payment. These are recorded against coarse preference segments (your chosen chat mode, region and distance, how many interests you picked, and whether a paid perk is active) — not against your anonymous user identifier, and never alongside the interests themselves or your location.
- Payment information, processed by our payment provider — we do not store full card details.
Third-party services
We use Firebase (Google) for real-time connectivity and Stripe for payments. These providers process data under their own privacy policies.
Your rights & choices
Depending on where you live (e.g. GDPR/UK GDPR, India DPDP, CCPA/CPRA), you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or restrict your data, to withdraw consent, and to opt out of analytics/"sharing". You can withdraw cookie consent by clearing this site's cookies. To exercise a right or ask a question, email privacy@strangerly.in.
Children
strangerly is strictly for adults 18+. We do not knowingly allow or collect data from minors. If you believe a minor has used the Service, contact us and we will act.
