How text chat works

  1. 1

    Choose Text

No camera or microphone permission is asked for — text mode needs neither.

  2. 2

    Add interests

Pick a few tags like Music, Anime or Football, or a language, to be matched with people who share them.

  3. 3

    Type

You are paired with one person. What you say is all they know about you.

  4. 4

    Next, any time

Leave when it stops being interesting, or tap Keep in touch if it is going well.

Who text chat is for

Plenty of people want to talk to a stranger without being seen or heard: on a train, in a shared room late at night, on a slow connection, or simply because they are judged on what they say rather than how they look. Text chat is that, with nothing else attached.

It is also the easiest way into a conversation in a second language — reading is far easier than listening in real time.

Translation, on your own device

On desktop Chrome and Edge, strangerly can translate the other person's messages into your language using the browser's built-in translator. It runs on your device, so the chat text is not sent to a translation service. On other browsers, including phones, the option simply does not appear.

Safety in text chat

Text feels safer than video, and mostly it is — but the person on the other side is invisible, so keep a few rules:

  • Do not share your real name, number, social handles, school or workplace.
  • Do not click links from strangers or move to another app because someone asked.
  • Never send money, gift cards or crypto, whatever the story.
  • Report or block in one tap. Reports are anonymous, and a blocked person is not matched with you again.

Tips for a text chat that goes somewhere

  • Skip "hi" and "asl". Open with a real question about an interest you share.
  • Short messages keep the rhythm going; walls of text stall it.
  • Start a game of Word Guess or Tic-Tac-Toe if you run out of things to say — it sits right next to the chat.

Prefer another way to talk? video chat or voice chat. Full rules are on the safety page.

Text chat FAQ

Can I text chat with strangers without a camera?

Yes. Text mode never asks for camera or microphone access. You only type, and the other person only sees your messages.

Is the text chat anonymous?

There is no sign-up, so no name, email or phone number is attached to you, and chats are not saved to a profile. Like any service, we keep limited logs to investigate abuse; see the privacy policy for details.

Is text chat free?

Yes. Text chat with strangers is free. Optional paid perks exist but are never needed to chat.

Can I chat in Hindi or another Indian language?

Yes. Pick a language tag such as Hindi, Tamil, Telugu or Gujarati and people who chose the same language are matched with you first.

Can I switch from text to voice or video?

Each chat uses the mode you started in. To talk instead, end the chat and pick voice or video — or, if you both tapped Keep in touch, call that friend again in a different mode.
